Sick leave is now a thing, the governor’s veto is not

01.12.18

The 2018 legislative session is off to a strong start! On January 12, both legislative chambers voted to override Gov. Larry Hogan’s veto of last year’s successful paid sick leave bill. While the House vote was predictable, the Senate not so much. And yet, lawmakers mustered the votes to override the veto, 30 to 17 (one vote more than the 29 required to override).

That means paid sick leave has a good chance at becoming law, providing thousands of people with the sort of protection they need to live healthy lives.

And you had a part in that! Last year, staff, clients and community members lobbied lawmakers on paid sick leave during our annual lobby day. Not long after, you flooded inboxes with dozens of emails and calls and endless passion and commitment. Thanks to you, the pressure on lawmakers never let up.

But uncertainties remain. On January 15, Gov. Hogan issued an executive order to create the Office of Small Business Regulatory Assistance that would help small businesses implement the new law. Lawmakers have 50 days to consent or pass a resolution of disapproval on the executive order. Lawmakers are also considering a 90-day delay of the new law, instead of the traditional 30-day period before legislation goes into effect.
